After living in San Francisco for eleven years, my husband and I moved to Oakland where we have settled down with our two children who are 6 and 8 years old. During my first pregancy in 2008, a friend invited me to see The Business of Being Born. Little did I know that this film would profoundly change my life. It taught me that birth is a rite of passage, as well as an incredibly empowering and transformative experience. I began reading voraciously about birth (Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and HypnoBirthing the Mongan Method in particular) and viewing many births on DVD. Gradually, I became inspired and in awe of this life event. I learned that there are a full range of options surrounding birth, and when women have access to those options, they have the capacity to make informed decisions for themselves, their baby, and their birth.
This process turned my world upside-down and inspired a new career path (I was formerly in the field of education, teaching in elementary schools and working for nonprofit organzations, and I have my Masters in Elementary Education). I decided to become a Certified Doula through the Natural Resources Doula Training in San Francisco and a Certified Childbirth Educator through the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA). I realized the profound effect that giving birth to my daughter and to myself as a mother had on my life, and that I wanted to support and guide other women and their partners during this most pivotal time. I don't know what birth will be like for you, but I'd love to support you as you find out!
